As an Australian author, I understand how hard it can be to take the first step from writing a book to getting it published.
We wanted to give Australian and New Zealand self-published authors an affordable way to present their books professionally. Together, we have well over a decade of combined experience helping authors self-publish their books on IngramSpark, Smashwords, Amazon KDP, Kobo, and more.

Just because you’re a self-published author, it doesn’t mean that you can’t put out a manuscript that’s equal to, if not better than, any mainstream published authors. We wanted to help Australian authors and authors from across the world turn their dreams into reality.
There are three main choices that you have to consider when it comes to where and how you plan to publish your book:
- Hybrid/Vanity Press.
- Traditional Publishing.
Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and it’s important to consider what’s going to suit you best carefully. Here’s a handy article on The Pros and Cons of Self-Publishing In Australia.
Let’s Look at the Differences Between the Three Options and what the Pros and Cons Are!
One. Traditionally Published – Publishing your book traditionally through a mainstream publisher can be quite frustrating as there are only limited spots available. It’s going to take some hard work, a lot of luck, and the ability to take criticism and rejection on the chin. However, if it pays off, it could set you up for life and won’t cost you anything to get your manuscript published. It’s important to consider that even some of the world’s best authors have had their books refused by traditional publishing houses, and it’s only a very small percentage of authors who ever succeed in making it via this route.
Two. Hybrid/Vanity Press – This is probably one of the least attractive options for many authors, and you need to be aware of what you’re getting yourself into. However, to the inexperienced, it can look and feel like a dream come true. You’ll have to pay for your formatting, cover design, publishing, social media marketing, editing, and much more. They’ll then release your book as a ‘published book,’ which you may have to promote yourself. They’ll also take a percentage of your royalties along the way and retain the rights to your book for a set period. Some are better than others, and it’s important to check your contract, including the fine print, before you agree to anything.
Three. Self-Published – For many authors, self-publishing their books is the only way to publish. They may have tried either of the two options above or are looking for more creative control over their book. You’re responsible for all the costs, but you also have a lot of creative control over how much you spend and what your finished product is going to be. The upside? You control the rights to your book and collect all the royalties. You’ll always control your content and can promote it as much or as little as you like. Also, there’s no reason why self-publishing a successful book can’t lead to a deal with a traditional publisher.
