Affordable Children’s Book Illustrations
Our talented illustrators at Author Services Australia can create affordable children’s book illustrations in various styles. If you have seen a storybook illustration you loved and would like to replicate that style in your children’s book, we’d love to provide you with a quote.
Planning your book illustrations should be done carefully, with much thought toward your text, storyline, and character development.
The illustrations in your book should work with the text, complimenting it but not overwhelming it. The balance between text and illustrations should tell the story together without leaning too heavily on one or the other.
Planning Your Children’s Book Layout and Style
Children’s books give you a lot of room to express yourself. You have several layout and design options when it comes to formatting your children’s book and how it will look in paperback and ebook formats.
You can go with the text on one page and the illustrations on the other.
Single spreads, where the left and right side of the page are individual illustrations with text incorporated into the illustrations or space left for text in the illustrations.
Or double spreads, where both the left and right pages of the book are one large illustration with the text incorporated into the illustrations or space left for the text.

How Much Do Children’s Book Illustrations Cost?
A typical children’s book costs approximately $100-$200 per illustration, with most children’s books having either 10 full-spread illustrations or 10 half-page illustrations with text on the opposite page.
Full-page spreads are illustrations that stretch across both the left and right pages, with the text incorporated into the illustration. When designing full-page spreads, your kid’s book illustrator will need to know how much text you have on the pages to better design the illustration surrounding it and prevent your text from being lost in the illustration.
Imagine looking at an open book with an illustration or picture spread across both pages. Below is an example full-page spread illustration.
Half-page illustrations are typically only on a single left or right page, with the text on the opposite page. However, you can have an entire picture book or kid’s book made of half-page illustrations with the text on top of the illustration. It will just cost more. Below is an example of a half-page illustration with the text on the opposite page.
You can also have a combination of full-page spreads and half-page illustrations, but you must ensure that you have an even number of half-page illustrations between your full-page spreads.

How Much Does It Cost for a Children’s Book Package?
Most of our children’s book packages start at around $2,500 and include writing, editing, 10 illustrations, book cover, children’s book formatting, and layout for ebook and paperback for Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) or IngramSpark Publishing. However, we’re happy to provide you with a custom children’s book or kid’s book creation package to suit your needs.
We can include additional illustrations and formats for multiple self-publishing platforms.

How Long Does It Take to Create A Kids Book?
The writing stage will depend on whether you write your own children’s or kid’s book or hire a writer to write it for you. If you’re writing your kid’s book, you can take as long as needed. However, if you have a writer or ghostwriter writing it for you, they’ll usually have a first draft completed within 2-4 weeks.
Editing a children’s book requires an additional 1-2 weeks but depends on how busy your children’s book editor is at the time of order.
It’s best to wait until your manuscript has been thoroughly edited before beginning the illustration stage of your children’s book. Just in case any last-minute text changes throw off the illustrations.
Illustrations typically take 2-4 weeks, depending on the complexity of the design, the style of the illustrations, how many illustrations you have, and how busy your kid’s book illustrator or designer is.
The final stage is paperback and ebook formatting for your children’s book. It’s best to allow 2-4 weeks for children’s book formatting. All up, most kid’s books or picture books can be completed in between 2-4 months from start to finish.

How Many Illustrations Are In A Children’s Book?
Children’s books need to be a minimum of 24 pages to be printed. They can have fewer pages, but most printers, including Print On Demand companies such as Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and IngramSpark Publishing, will add blank pages to the end of your book to make up the difference.

You can have a combination of full-page spreads and half-page illustrations to reach your desired page length, but you need to ensure that you have an even number of half-page illustrations in between your full-page spreads.
Most children’s books or picture books have a minimum of 10 illustrations, either half page or full spread, plus front matter such as a title page, copyright page, dedication page, and then end matter such as about the author or other books by this author.
Why Are Illustrations Important In Children’s Books?
Your illustrations don’t tell the whole story, and neither does your text. In fact, your text and illustrations or pictures work together, in harmony, to tell the story.
Your children’s pictures or illustrations should complement the text, enhance the message, and tell the story without overwhelming the message.
