Welcome to Author Services Australia, Simon J Carey, and welcome to our author interviews! If you could start by introducing yourself to everyone, let them know where you’re from and some of your interests and hobbies.
Born in New Zealand, now an Australian citizen. Studied Polymer Technology at RMIT(Melbourne) and worked in the petrochemical industry in various Asia-Pacific locations. Now retired. My wife and I share our time between our properties at Wilsons Prom (Australia), Thailand and Canada. Interests include travel, golf, sailing and snow skiing.
What inspired you to start writing?
I did write during my career (technical articles etc.), and had planned to write a novel when I retired. Then I was asked to write the story of this Russian émigré family and was provided with a lot of background detail. It was too good an opportunity to miss.
What is your preferred genre to write in?
I have written the family story (Book #1 in the series) as historical fiction. The next three books will be the same genre.
What is your writing process?
Research, write a draft, self edit, give to my writers group to review and criticise, re-write, get someone to check the grammar, give to a select group of beta-readers, re-edit, publish.
What is one thing you wish you knew now that you didn’t know when you started writing?
How long the process would take.
What was the hardest part of self-publishing?
Distributing and getting visibility for your book without a publishing house behind you.
Which book is your favorite and why?
Already mentioned below, but most of Hemingway’s. I like his simple, clear-cut style of writing.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Hemingway, Le Carre, Alan Furst, and Len Deighton.
What are you working on right now?
Marketing of Book #1 in the Sukhov Series and trying to allocate time to start work on Book #2 (already in rough draft form).
How do you handle a bad review?
I look forward to getting one. At least it’s a review.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Hopefully not in a Thai prison – there are certain serious political sensitivities about Book #4
Where is your ultimate holiday destination?
Skiing in British Columbia.
What are some of the items on your bucket list?
We prefer “slow” travel these days, not tearing around the world trying to tick boxes. Been there, done that. But in saying that, Flinders Ranges (South Australia) and Alaska are in planning stages for 2024/25.
