Welcome to Author Services Australia Chelsea Luker, and welcome to our author interviews! If you could start by introducing yourself to everyone, let them know where you’re from and some of your interests and hobbies.
I’m Chelsea! I was born and raised in Lismore NSW. I spend most of my time in my psychology practice (Connect Us Psychology), with my family (husband, two kiddos and a wild cavoodle), or learning about all things psychology!! I enjoy reading, playing piano, spending time in nature (from an acceptable distance), and playing/watching musicals!
What inspired you to start writing?
I wanted Autistic/ADHDers to see themselves represented in fiction form.
What is your preferred genre to write in?
This is my first time dipping my toes into the writing world! I really enjoy short stories, as I feel you can say a lot in a small number of words!
What is your writing process?
I wrote my entire book on the notes app of my phone, over several months. Typically writing sessions occurred at midnight, when I was certainly supposed to be sleeping. I gradually ended up with seven stories that I really liked, and after some solid convincing decided to turn these stories into a book!! I was then far more sensible and transferred the stories over to my computer and got my amazing team on board to help!
What is one thing you wish you knew now that you didn’t know when you started writing?
There is a heck of a lot of steps involved in writing and self-publishing a book – it is not for the faint-hearted!
What was the hardest part of self-publishing?
Definitely marketing! Putting myself out there doesn’t come naturally to me – but I am so passionate about my book that I want it to spread as far and wide as possible!
What are you working on right now?
I will admit I do have a second book brewing in my mind! I will wait to see how this one goes – before deciding if it will make it onto paper!
How do you handle a bad review?
Some people may be familiar with the concept of rejection sensitive dysphoria – and if not, my book has some great information on this! I likely will not handle a bad review well, but I have a strong flock around me to support me with the expected highs and lows of book publishing!
If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?
Invisibility for sure! This would get me out of a lot of sticky situations!
Where is your ultimate holiday destination?
I want to say the Maldives, but I’m not sure why! Probably somewhere that is quiet, with not too many people, a little bit of nature, some good food, and involves a lot of down time.
