Welcome to Author Services Australia, Carole Anton, and welcome to our author interviews! If you could start by introducing yourself to everyone, let them know where you’re from and some of your interests and hobbies.
What inspired you to start writing?
When I was in 5th grade, my teacher’s love for poetry inspired me to pursue poetry reading, and I started writing and publishing poetry later on.
What is your preferred genre to write in?
Psychological Thriller/ Mystery
What is your writing process?
Messy. I don’t follow a particular process. Initially, I jot down all my ideas everywhere until they start making sense for a story. All my stories, though mostly fiction, are based on real events from childhood memories and personal experiences.
What is one thing you wish you knew now that you didn’t know when you started writing?
That I am capable. For the longest time, at school, I struggled with writing clean essays, and it took me years of educating myself outside of school to grasp the English language. I went from a hard Fail to a High Distinction, and the rest is history.
What was the hardest part of self-publishing?
Accepting the mistakes I’ve made along the way as life lessons.
If you use a pen name, why and how did you come up with it?
I have published poetry under my family name ‘Abourjeili’, but I found that people struggled to remember it when they needed to search my work. My second name is ‘Anton’ after my father’s name. I have started to use Carole Anton as my pen name for my novels.
Which book is your favorite and why?
The Alchemist, because it touches on the soul of life and awakens the urge to live life in the moment, as it comes.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
I like Naguib Mahfouz and Shakespeare as they have been my biggest inspirations for my poetry writing. Right now, I am reading Freida McFadden and John Marrs, a bit different from Shakespeare, but I’m really enjoying the thriller stories and twists that are similar to my books.
What are you working on right now?
I am in the process of publishing my “Knock Knock” series, a Psychological thriller that comes with secrets and twists. The idea stems from my childhood memory when, during the war time in Lebanon, women would dress in Bedouin attires, a black robe from head to toe. They would knock on doors asking to help clean the homes but dare you invite them in, the life of the home and family would be ruined forever.
How do you handle a bad review?
I don’t know yet. I think even God couldn’t please everyone, so we all have different opinions, and I should be ok with it. Or, maybe cry under my blanket at night and dream up a spell for those reviewers, ha-ha.
What’s next for you as an author?
I want to be a household name for my genre because I believe in my work. My stories are unique, and they invite the reader in, and into a world they wouldn’t know existed otherwise.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
If you’ve read my first book ‘Unlock Yourself”, you’d know that life taught me to live day by day from an early age. This very moment is a blessing, and I am thankful for it.
If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?
To be completely in tune and present in the moment with the people I’m surrounded by. Unfortunately, with all the distractions around us nowadays, being present in the moment is becoming increasingly unattainable. Sadly, being present used to be a natural way of life; now has become a superpower for most, including me.
Where is your ultimate holiday destination?
Anywhere I feel out of my element. When I went to the Greek Islands many years ago, I got lost, and I had to teach myself to read the alphabet from the street signs to get back to my hotel. No one around me at that time spoke English. It took me two hours to write the hotel name to a mechanic who owned a donkey. He called a taxi for me.
What are some of the items on your bucket list?
I always imagine myself as an old woman on her deathbed and ask myself: “Is this a moment I want to take with me?” I want to do good in the world and be a force of love and kindness because, in the end, that’s all we can take with us.
