Hello, everyone! It’s a pleasure to be here. My name is Drici Amos James, known as DAJ 2020, in the literary world. I am the author of “EMOTIONS”, my multi-award-winning debut collection of poetry that earned me the moniker “God of Poetry”. I was born and raised in Kampala, Uganda, in East Africa. Art has always been my oxygen of survival and a clay of redemption since puerility. I am proudly a self-taught creative force and a self-published author, poet, model, artist, and writer. Writing has always been my passion besides my other talents and gifts. I enjoy nature walks, deep talks, philosophy, reading, travel, exploring new cultures, and recipes. I’ve always found inspiration in the world around me. I’m thrilled to be part of this community and look forward to sharing more about my journey as an author!
What inspired you to start writing?
I was inspired by the vibrant, colourful illustrations in the children’s books that my late dad bought me as an infant. I would spend hours lost in admiration, and each page triggered the urge to write my own stories. I have been a book lover and an avid reader since then.
What is your preferred genre to write in?
Poetry is my first love. I love writing poetry and children’s books, but I am a versatile author. Have decided to channel my creativity towards these two genres, maybe in the near future, I can explore the rest.
What is your writing process?
When an idea strikes my mind, I let it marinate and talk to me. I let the story write itself through me. That’s how simple my writing process is.
What is one thing you wish you knew now that you didn’t know when you started writing?
I wish I knew that writing is not a sprint. It’s a gradual process that requires dedication, commitment, patience, and resilience. I first thought finishing a manuscript meant finishing a book, but it goes beyond blood and bones. The process is just as important as the end result, and it’s okay to take the time you need to get there. From the first word to the last, it’s a journey worth celebrating.
If you use a pen name, why and how did you come up with it?
Yes, “DAJ” is an abbreviation for my government name, and “2020” is the year I took my writing to a professional level. It just came to me automatically when I was creating my writing account on Wattpad.
Which book is your favorite and why?
“The Ashen Blue” by the multi-award-winning and best-selling author Dapharoah69 because the poems in the book are honest, true, raw, unapologetic, uncensored, and thought-provoking.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Rumi, Robert Frost, Robert Greene, and Dapharoah69.
What are you working on right now?
At the moment, I’m working on finalizing the editing process of my second poetry collection book that will be released this year on 7/12/2025.
How do you handle a bad review?
I don’t let anything foreign blind my vision. I write for myself. I’m my biggest fan.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
To write more books and build my audience and author brand.
Where is your ultimate holiday destination?
Jamaica, Ghana, Ethiopia, and the Maldives.
What are some of the items on your bucket list?
To write, act, and produce my long-time television series titled “Behind the Portrait”.
