Welcome to Author Services Australia, Suzanne Patterson, and welcome to our author interviews! If you could start by introducing yourself to everyone, let them know where you’re from and some of your interests and hobbies.
Suzanne Patterson lives in Bathurst, Australia, with her husband and treasures time with her two grown children. She is an avid koala lover and hopes to one day cuddle one. Suzanne loves to doodle maps, make giant bubbles, and have a frothy coffee. She enjoys creating stories from a GINORMOUS imagination pot that makes children giggle, laugh, and believe in the magic of books.
What inspired you to start writing?
A love of picture books when my kids were young, a penchant for writing diaries and journals, and short stories. Also sharing the joy and imagination in a good story that can encourage a love of reading and take you to faraway places.
What is your preferred genre to write in?
As a debut author, my preferred genre to write in is picture books. I am honing my skills to write a small chapter book.
What is your writing process?
I don’t have a formal writing process; it generally happens when the ideas flow, anywhere, anytime. Early mornings are my thing, and I can often be found taking notes in a notebook and on my laptop. I will spend part of my day at my desktop and always have a pen and paper with me. Sometimes a ‘panster’ and sometimes a planner.
What is one thing you wish you knew now that you didn’t know when you started writing?
That you have to be resilient and pick yourself up and keep going.
Which book is your favorite and why?
I have many favourites, but These Little Feet, written by a fellow regional author, Hayley Rawsthorne, is a beautiful book captured in rhyme, capturing the journey of love, hope, and dreams for the future.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Again, I have many, some being Zanni Louise, Pip Harry, Charlotte Barkla, Rory Mather, and Mary Anastasiou.
What are you working on right now?
I have three new PB manuscripts that need edits, a project part planned on teaching kids how to read a map, and a small chapter book half done.
What’s next for you as an author?
To continue to keep abreast of market trends, increase my writing skills, and finish my chapter book manuscript.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Hopefully, I will still be sharing my stories with a wider community and still encouraging a love of reading.
If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?
I would like to be able to fly, so I can see more of the world and be able to observe people and places for great stories.
