Author Interview with Australian Author Maria P Frino

Welcome to Author Services Australia Maria P Frino, and welcome to our author interviews! If you could start by introducing yourself to everyone, let our readers know where you’re from and some of your interests and hobbies. What inspired you to start writing?

My career started in television, so this sparked my interest in writing. Since then, I have always had a writing element in my jobs. I became a published author in 2019.

What is your preferred genre to write in?

Contemporary is my favourite although Young Adult comes a close second.

What is your writing process?

Random actually. I still work at a day job, have an elderly mother to look after and my family. I am also part of Sydney Authors Inked, a group of authors who help other writers. This takes up some of my time, too. When I do sit to write it is an 8-hour day.

What is one thing you wish you knew now that you didn’t know when you started writing?

How hard it is to sell books, especially fiction.

What was the hardest part of self-publishing?

It is a steep learning curve and setting up the books on sites was a nightmare in the beginning.

If you use a pen name, why and how did you come up with it?

Maria P Frino is my maiden name. Maria Giunta is my married name, and I wanted to keep them separate.

Which book is your favorite and why?Fame & Other Disasters

If I had to pick one it would be my debut, The Decision They Made. This is where I learned the most about self-publishing. I made many mistakes along the way, but once I published this one in November 2019, the others were easier. The Decision They Made is loosely based on stories I heard about WWII from my parents and family members.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Including the three above – JoJo Moyes, Justin Cronin, Celeste Ng, and Marian Keyes. Other Aussie authors are Judy NunnAshley Kalagian Blunt, and Holden Sheppard.

What are you working on right now?

Fame & Other Disasters, my adult contemporary novel, was published on 1st November 2024, so I’m having a break until next year.

How do you handle a bad review?

I’m not going to lie. They hurt. But not everyone is going to like my work. ~ There’s no denying that a bad review hurts, but as authors, learning that we’ll never please everyone all the time is an essential lesson to take on.

What’s next for you as an author?

I will be writing a young adult science fantasy with magical themes and robots. This story explores AI, robots with human feelings, and a teenage boy with magical powers.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I am still writing and trying to sell the print books I have stored in my garage.

If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?

Swim underwater without apparatus. I’d love to explore the ocean and swim with dolphins and whales.

Where is your ultimate holiday destination?

Europe, but specifically Italy. With parents who were born near the Amalfi Coast, I can relate to this part of the world.

What are some of the items on your bucket list?

See more of Australia, especially Western Australia. Live in London at some stage (so I can visit Italy more often). Swim with dolphins. Watch the Tennis Opens around the world.
