Author Interview with International Author A K Hauser

Welcome to Author Services Australia A K Hauser, and welcome to our author interviews! If you could start by introducing yourself to everyone, let them know where you’re from and some of your interests and hobbies.

Hello everyone & thanks for having me! My name is Andy. I’m half Danish and half German, but I grew up and currently live in Denmark. I’ve always been a lover of stories — real or fictitious — especially when the setting is ancient, nature-focused, or in general just as far from our own reality as possible.

I love a good hike, a good movie, a good history documentary, or a good video game — other than that, I spend all of my time developing my fantasy world, whether that be through writing, thinking, dreaming, or working with artists to bring it all to life.

What inspired you to start writing?

I had just quit my job and was severely depressed and in lack of life lust, so to sorta bring myself back to a livable state, I started developing what I initially thought of as a video game world. I quickly realized that what I was writing wasn’t a world, though, but a book! This was nearly 4 years ago. I’ve been refining that first book – The Cradle of Oshae – ever since.

What is your preferred genre to write in?

Fantasy, especially in pre-medieval settings.

What is your writing process?

I’d really love to know as well. I think my process changes every month, and I can’t wait to get deeper into writing book 2 as I feel the process there will be much more consistent and smooth. Generally, though, I don’t really have an idea of what I want to write before I sit down and type. I feel, I write, and then the story unveils itself—and then I begin to think, which usually derails the story (or I realize that where I felt it was going yesterday doesn’t add up with where I feel it should go now).

In essence: chaos happens, and then I try to tidy it up.

What is one thing you wish you knew now that you didn’t know when you started writing?

That there’s something called a “character arc” and a “plot” 😂
One of my first beta readers called my book “a written documentary” because nothing really happened. I took that criticism to heart! ~ That would be some tough feedback to receive on your first manuscript, but at least you took the advice and pushed through it ~ Clayton.

What was the hardest part of self-publishing?

The process I’m in right now: finalizing the files with the exact formatting that Amazon, Draft2Digital, and IngramSpark will accept. I thought this would take a week, max. It’s taken almost a month, and I’m afraid I soon won’t have any more hair to pull out. ~ Getting your book formatting perfect is definitely an art form! ~ Clayton.

Which book is your favorite and why?

Probably the next one I’m writing, to be honest! My mind has kind of forgotten that I wrote The Cradle of Oshae. I’m all-in on the sequel, plus a collection of prequel novellas.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

J.R.R. Tolkien, Jean M. Auel, and Patrick Rothfuss. I’m not very well-read in fantasy as I read (or listen to) mostly history—especially bronze age stuff—but those three definitely have a special corner in my heart.

The Cradle of Oshae - Author A K HauserWhat are you working on right now?

The sequel to The Cradle of Oshae, plus a prequel novella detailing the life of one of the gods featured in the novel.

How do you handle a bad review?

I’m keen to find out. I THINK I’ll treat them as beta reader critique: learn and use what I can and discard the rest. I’m aware that not every book is for every reader, and I think I look forward to reading the essay-style criticisms much more than the two-word ones! (…this statement might haunt me forever, ha-ha) ~ I don’t mind reading a bad review that’s based on some sort of feedback/criticism. The ones I don’t like are the random reviews about quality, which we can’t control utilizing Print On Demand services such as Amazon, or just reviews like ‘I hated it.’ ~ Clayton.

What’s next for you as an author?

Right now, I’m preparing for an art exhibition that I’ve put together. It features 30 artists who’ve read The Cradle of Oshae and interpreted it through their art here in Odense, Denmark, which opens on November 18 and closes on December 1.

Then, onto books 2 and 3. Then, onto the rest of the overarching saga’s 9 ages, which will likely take me a lifetime to explore and write.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In a quieter apartment, with a cat, perhaps in Copenhagen but probably in Odense. Career-wise, I’m dreaming of doing this for a living!

If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?

Flight? Yeah. I think it’d be flight. I feel like a lot of things can be achieved, felt, and explored that way.

Where is your ultimate holiday destination?

I want to say Bali or some other beachy place simply because I’ve never been, but I feel like the mountains are just as compelling.

What are some of the items on your bucket list?

Well, it’s a Bali beach vacation for sure, but I can dream of going to Maroo in the meantime. I’d also like to live in a home with a bathtub. That’s been a small dream for the last couple of years.
