Welcome to Author Services Australia, M J Glenn, and welcome to our author interviews! If you could start by introducing yourself to everyone, you could let them know where you’re from and some of your interests and hobbies.
I’m from Suffolk in the UK, and alongside writing, I am the director and founder of Softwood Books (we help authors independently publish). I am a stepmother of three boys, I spend my spare time crafting (with clay, mostly), and I’m a Swiftie.
What inspired you to start writing?
At the age of seven, I said to myself, ‘One day, one of these books on my shelf will be mine’. All I wanted was for my book to sit on people’s shelves! I think I always wanted to be a writer from the moment I could read.
What is your preferred genre to write in?
So far, I have written fantasy, but I am planning to branch out in the future (crime drama, perhaps?)
What is your writing process?
I plot meticulously, handwrite everything, edit as I type it up, then spend months dreaming, planning, breathing the editing process. My brain gets kind of caught up in it. When I sit down to write, I can go for 5 hour stretches without noticing the time go by.
What is one thing you wish you knew now that you didn’t know when you started writing?
Plot the entire book series in one go. Don’t try to make it up as you go along (many headaches have been caused).
Which book is your favorite and why?
This is such a hard question! I’ve loved so many books, but three that really stood out to me were A Clockwork Orange (terrifying but brilliantly clever), Little Women (heartwarming and nostalgic), and Where the Crawdads Sing (just simply beautiful).
What are you working on right now?
I’m currently working on book 3 of my fantasy series – slowly plugging away at it! But I’ve always got other ideas trying to catch my attention.
What’s next for you as an author?
I’ve got various ideas up my sleeve! A collection of short stories, a crime thriller, a standalone fantasy … I’ll get to them one day!
If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?
To fly. I often have dreams where I can fly, and I always feel sad when I wake up from them!
Where is your ultimate holiday destination?
Somewhere warm with exotic markets and interesting people, amazing things to see and taste and experience. I loved New Zealand, Morocco, and Turkey and would go back any day.
