Author Interview with Australian Author Sharon Giltrow

Welcome to Author Services Australia, Sharon Giltrow, and welcome to our author interviews! If you could start by introducing yourself to everyone, let them know where you’re from and some of your interests and hobbies.

Hi, I am Sharon Giltrow, an award-winning Children’s Author.

I grew up in South Australia, the youngest of eight children, surrounded by pet sheep and fields of barley. I now live in Perth, WA, with my husband and two children. I have taught for all my career and now teach young children with Developmental Language Disorder.

My humorous debut PB Bedtime Daddy, released May 2020.

My follow-up PB, GET READY, MAMA! released in April 2022, and is a SPEECH PATHOLOGY AUSTRALIA shortlisted BOOK OF THE YEAR.

My third PB, LET’S GO SHOPPING, GRANDMA! released in September 2023.

Awarded The Paper Bird Fellowship for Writers in 2019, I used this time to write SAMARA RUBIN AND THE UTILITY BELT, book one of my debut early middle-grade series, which released in August 2023.

What inspired you to start writing?

My own children as well as the children I teach. Sharing books especially my own books with children is one of my most favourite things to do.

What is your preferred genre to write in?

I started by writing picture books then I started writing early middle-grade books. They are both my favourite for different reasons. It is great to be able to write for children from 3-13 years old.

What is your writing process?

Catch an idea. Brainstorm the idea. Get to know my characters inside and out. Plot my story. Outline my story. Write my story. Revise. Re-write. Revise. Re-write. Submit to publishers. Cross my fingers. Get a contract. Work with the publisher, editors, and illustrator. Release my story. Read my story to children.

What is one thing you wish you knew now that you didn’t know when you started writing?

Author Sharon Giltrow - Let's Go Shopping GrandmaHow hard it is to get a book published. Persistence and perseverance are certainly needed as a writer.

What are you working on right now?

A new early middle-grade series called WARATAH AND IVY BEAN – TRAVEL THROUGH TIME.

If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?

What a great question. My debut early middle grade book SAMARA RUBIN AND THE UTILITY BELT is about having superpowers. Except SAMARA has a utility belt full of tools that she can use when she faces everyday challenges. So, instead of having one superpower, I would love to have a real utility belt that I could use when needed.
