Welcome to Author Services Australia, Rich Larsen, and welcome to our author interviews! If you could start by introducing yourself to everyone, let them know where you’re from and some of your interests and hobbies.
Hi, my name is Rich Larsen. I live on the Bellarine Peninsula in Victoria. When I’m not at work or writing, I love to be outside running, cycling, surfing and hiking.
What inspired you to start writing?
I’ve always enjoyed writing. I find it a therapeutic process (most of the time!). When I first started writing with the intention to produce a novel, I think it was just the idea itself that spurred me on. I wanted to see where I could take the story.
What is your preferred genre to write in?
Literary fiction seems to be where I’ve found myself. I love to write about the struggles and downfalls of human beings.
What is your writing process?
I generally have an idea or two floating in my head. It’s not until I’m confident that there is enough substance to create a novel that I begin writing. I’ll usually sketch out a basic outline of the storyline and then just start the first draft. I find the best thing for me is to just write and see what happens. I can always edit it later!
What is one thing you wish you knew now that you didn’t know when you started writing?
The pitch is an integral skill to have as an author. The submission process is something I am still learning but I wish I had put more time into it when I first started.
Which book is your favorite and why?
I recently read John Koenig’s The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows and absolutely loved it. There’s something comforting about knowing that someone else experiences life in a similar way to you. It changed the way I think about how we live. It may have just snatched the crown off Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Richard Powers, Kate Harris, Peter Matthiessen, and Tim Winton.
What’s next for you as an author?
I would love to continue to publish my work. At the moment, it’s a hobby but I’m willing to let it take me wherever it leads. I’ll continue to learn and develop my skills and hopefully gain some valuable networks through my first publication.
If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?
There would be nothing quite like the feeling of flying!
