The Australian Publishers Association

What is the APA, and what do they do?

Today we’re looking at what the Australian Publishers Association (APA) is, what it does, and the benefits it offers its members. Being part of associations, especially Australian-based organizations such as the APA, is vital to the publishing process.

While the Australian Publishers Association may not be for everyone, it could provide you with valuable resources as you navigate the publishing world.

How and When Did the Australian Publishers Association Start?

The Australian Publishers Association is the national representative body for the Australian publishing industry and was established in 1948 after a merger between the Victorian and NSW Publishers Associations.

Originally, the APA was open to trade publishers, but since 1966 has opened the doors to any individual or organization engaged in publishing in Australia to better reflect the changing publishing landscape.

Currently, the APA represents over 200 publishers engaged in publishing books in Australia.

What Does the APA Do?

The APA promotes and champions the interests of Australian publishers, supports industry learning and development, and promotes the value of Australian books to Australia. They aim to make publishing easier, deliver key programs and initiatives, and advocate for Australian publishers.

The APA membership comprises companies and individuals from all parts of the Australian publishing spectrum. These members include large multinationals, sole traders, independents, and children’s book publishers.
