Welcome to Author Services Australia, Tayla Holborow, and welcome to our author interviews! If you could start by introducing yourself to everyone, let them know where you’re from and some of your interests and hobbies.
Thanks for having me!
What inspired you to start writing?
I have always loved writing. My primary school published my first book in the school library when I was in kindergarten! As I’ve grown older though, I’ve found writing to be one of the only ways I can truly and deeply express my heart. It’s pure limitless imagination, and I love the feeling of getting lost in a world you’re creating out of nothing. Just like in all art, it can be vulnerable to create from your heart, but when you write with vulnerability, it will resonate with people, connect, move, and inspire them.
What is your preferred genre to write in?
I love a mystery/thriller with a bit of adventure thrown in. However, I also love to indulge in a good love side story where the characters can explore deeper parts of themselves.
What is your writing process?
I usually start with a general idea or through-line of what I want the story to be about and then just write. I don’t plan too much. I find it stagnates the writing process. Usually, when I just trust the process, the story begins to write itself.
What is one thing you wish you knew now that you didn’t know when you started writing?
Nothing. If I knew how hard it was going to be, I wouldn’t have started… ~ Don’t spoil it for everyone! But yes, self-publishing can be hard, but once you get the process down, it’s actually just a series of steps to follow. Ultimately, you hold all the power to succeed within yourself. ~ Clayton
What was the hardest part of self-publishing?
There are so many steps in getting a book published. When publishing traditionally, you have a team of people to help you through each step of the process. In self-publishing, you’re kind of on your own and have to ensure you have covered every step from writing to editing (multiple and multiple drafts), formatting/typesetting, cover design, marketing, distribution, and sales.
Which book is your favorite and why?
My favourite book is actually outside my writing genre. I love Brene Brown’s ‘Daring Greatly.‘ It’s a book I believe everyone should read.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Brene Brown, J.K Rowling, and Paulo Coelho.
What are you working on right now?
I’m close to finishing a contemporary mystery/thriller which follows a rebellious FBI agent who is hell-bent on unraveling a deep government conspiracy he believes is connected to his son’s disappearance. ~ Sounds awesome! ~ Clayton
What’s next for you as an author?
Finishing the above story!
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Wherever life takes me. ~ What a great attitude to have! ~ Clayton
If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?
Flying. I’ve had so many flying dreams where I can jump and take off. I think the feeling would be indescribable.
