Author Interview with Australian Author Kim Northwood

Welcome to Author Services Australia, Kim Northwood, and welcome to our author interviews! If you could start by introducing yourself to everyone, let them know where you’re from and some of your interests and hobbies.

Hi, I’m Kim Northwood, and my debut book, Work Less, Make More – The Millennial’s Guide to Financial Freedom, is available for pre-order now.

What inspired you to start writing?

Putting together a book is an incredibly challenging process, and I wanted to see if I could meet the challenge. I have always found books to be the best medium to convey ideas, and I wanted to put my own thoughts down in a coherent, researched way.

What is your preferred genre to write in?

I prefer to write about economics and personal finance, as these are areas I work in and know well.Author Kim Northwood

What is your writing process?

The most daunting part about writing a book was putting all my ideas down in a structured and engaging manner. My process was to just start writing every day, aiming for around 500-1000 words each time I sat down at my computer. Once I had a full first draft, I began to see the book holistically and could then go back and edit for flow and structure. The editing process took far longer than the time to write the initial first draft.

What is one thing you wish you knew now that you didn’t know when you started writing?

However long you think your book will take, double it… then double it again.

Which book is your favorite and why?

The best book I ever read was Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. It’s the best exposition of human desires, frustrations, hypocrisy, and constraints that I’ve ever read.

The most recent great book that I read is ‘Guns, Germs and Steel’ by Jared Diamond.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Yuval Hariri, Jared Diamond, Daniel Kahneman, Enid Blyton, and Nassim Taleb.

What are you working on right now?

I’m working on promoting my first book, ‘Work Less, Make More – The Millennial’s Guide to Financial Freedom.’ I have found that the marketing and distribution aspect of publishing a book is equally as important and requires just as much time as writing the book itself.

What’s next for you as an author?

My next book will likely be on the same topics of finance and economics. These are incredibly important aspects of our society, despite their reputations as boring. We spend so little time understanding how economics work, and we are not taught personal finance at school, but it drives so much of what we do during our adult lives. I am keen to explore further some of the quirks of the economy that influence how we interact and build businesses, friends, and family.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I would love to have a strong catalog of books published and to have gained a reputation as an engaging, insightful author. I would like the opportunity to speak about my ideas at writers’ festivals and other conferences.

If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?

I think stand-up comedy is the most difficult of all art forms. If I could choose one superpower, it would be the ability to make people laugh. It is such a skill that you can almost consider it a superpower. In 2020, I finally achieved my dream of performing a stand-up comedy routine in front of an audience at Smith’s Alternative in Canberra. I will hopefully be getting up again soon on stage.
