Welcome to Author Services Australia, and welcome to our author interviews! If you could start by introducing yourself to everyone, let them know where you’re from and some of your interests and hobbies.
What inspired you to start writing?
When I was 14 years old, I read my first big fantasy novel—Twilight, unsurprisingly. I’ve always loved books and creating stories, but that was the first moment I thought about writing a book. And now, 10 years later, I published and wrote that book, Silver Valley. I would never have thought such a thing were possible if it weren’t for the dreams of that 14-year-old girl.
What is your preferred genre to write in?
My preferred genre is fiction, in any shape or format. I love developing stories and building worlds. Currently, my series is a twist on fantasy in a scientific format. I love fantasy with all my heart, but making the fantasy world seem possible and come to life was something I’ve always wanted. Hence, the sprinkle of Sci-Fi comes into play.
What is your writing process?
The biggest thing for any author is to just write—smash out that first draft out—which is exactly what I do to let the story flow. Despite this, I set myself checkpoints so that the story stays consistent, and then guide my characters towards those points. But in between, I allow them to fill the spaces and bring in their personalities. Once that first draft is done, I go back and sprinkle in more Easter Eggs, add more links, and add more depth. It’s a system that allows me both to be creative and to keep the story flowing.
What is one thing you wish you knew now that you didn’t know when you started writing?
When I first started writing, I wish I knew it was okay to ask for help. The publishing industry can be extremely daunting when you first enter it, but you’re not expected to do it all yourself. I went around and asked questions, hired people to assist me with covers and formatting, and built a wonderful community both among my friends/family and on my social media platforms.
What was the hardest part of self-publishing?
The hardest part for me of self-publishing was figuring out how to make it all happen and how to manage tasks around each other in time for the release. For example, you need your book cover done quite early for title announcements and preorders, but you also can’t finalize the cover spread until right at the very end after editing and formatting. It’s a balance, and it takes time to learn.
Which book is your favorite and why?
Definitely Silver Valley. It’s my heart and soul. But book 2 in my series is coming very close.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Sarah J Maas, Madeline Miller, and Rick Riordan, to name a few.
What are you working on right now?
Book 2 of my Silver Valley trilogy.
What’s next for you as an author?
I’d love to keep doing this forever, hopefully working on building a wider network of readers.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Doing this, writing and being in the industry, with my social media presence for my novel expanding.
If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?
Teleportation. I would love to see all my readers across the world just with a snap! How cool would that be! Who needs plane tickets?
