Welcome to Author Services Australia, and welcome to our author interviews! If you could start by introducing yourself to everyone Tara Wright, let them know where you’re from and some of your interests and hobbies.
My name is Tara Wright. I am a self-published Children’s book Author of The Kate Collection. I live in Dubbo, NSW, Australia, and am a mother to a beautiful little girl Aria Grace. From a young age, I have been interested in reading and creative writing, with a lifelong dream to one day become a published author.
What inspired you to start writing?
I have had a passion for creative writing since I was young, always reading and writing in my free time. The inspiration to start the Kate Collection Children’s books came to me one night after reading to my daughter. I had found, over the previous 4 years, that a lot of mainstream children’s books left a lot to be desired in the way of creativity, education, life lessons, etc. I found we both preferred books with catchy rhymes and bright, colourful illustrations. So I thought, why not create a collection of children’s books that were not only enjoyable to read but could also educate, hence, The Kate Collection was born.
What is your preferred genre to write in?
Currently, my genre is Children’s picture books; however, eventually, I would like to write a fantasy/romance novel as that is what I personally enjoy reading.
What is your writing process?
I start with the concept, then plot out a page-by-page draft. From here, I work on one page at a time to get a fun rhyming story. I usually visualize the illustrations I want to go with each page and write the illustrator notes as I go.
What is one thing you wish you knew now that you didn’t know when you started writing?
There is a lot involved, and it can be quite costly. But it’s worth it to see the final product. A big achievement.
What was the hardest part of self-publishing?
Knowing where to start was the hardest part for me. Once I connected with Author Services Australia and was given guidance and advice, it made the process a lot less daunting. ~ Thank you, Tara. It was a pleasure to be part of your journey through the self-publishing world!
Which book is your favorite and why?
I am a huge Harry Potter fan. I love all of them but specifically the Deathly Hallows. The way JK Rowling tied everything up with a nice bow at the end really just amazed me. You could tell she had the ending figured out right from the beginning. It all made sense. So well done!
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Julia Quinn, JK Rowling, Roald Dahl, and Dan Brown.
What are you working on right now?
I’m currently working on the second book in The Kate Collection – Kate Learns the Body. I also have a plot in mind for a novel at a later date.
What’s next for you as an author?
At the moment, I am focusing on Marketing and Distribution of my first book. Trying to get my name out there and gather some followers. Ideally, I would love to get my next book into publication, but, running as a business, I need to cover my initial costs before proceeding with the next project.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years, I would ideally like to have 2-3 books published and on sale. I’d like a solid following with support from Libraries, Book Stores, and Schools for wider distribution.
If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?
Ooo that is a tricky one. I think I’d love to be able to fly. I’d be able to get places quicker and visit faraway destinations, but mostly it would be the freedom. To just fly away into the sunset, the wind in my face, up high in the sky. Peace, space, and endless possibilities.
