Author Interview with Australian Author Paul Dekmetzian

Welcome to Author Services Australia, Paul, and welcome to our author interviews! If you could start by introducing yourself to everyone, let them know where you’re from and some of your interests and hobbies.

What inspired you to start writing?

A few years ago, I restored an old Australian Army truck of the type I used to drive as a young Private in the Army Reserve. This vehicle served in the army for 20 years but also came with a wonderful civilian history. I felt that story was a solid foundation for a series of fun and happy children’s books.

What is your preferred genre to write in?

Children’s Books 4-9 years of age.

What is your writing process?

Select the theme, direction, and tempo of the storyline, write and rewrite an initial draft several times, select photos and images, and then work with Author Services Australia to bring the book to life. It is very exciting!

What is one thing you wish you knew now that you didn’t know when you started writing?

The most important thing is to start. Once you are moving, the rest falls into place.

What was the hardest part of self-publishing?

An author can feel a little isolated and really needs marketing direction and advice to get the books moving. It’s a challenging cost/benefit style exercise.

Which book is your favorite and why?

Cargo is Ready to Go! Book 3. This book is the first where Cargo builds his own character and is starting to evolve as himself. It is the break-out book for the Cargo story and is indeed a new dawn as per the cover. My favourite!

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Enid Blyton, Dr. Seuss, J. R. R. Tolkien, and J K Rowling.

What are you working on right now?

Book 4, Cargo’s Furry Friends!

What’s next for you as an author?

To complete the series of 12 books in the Cargo series, which is expected to take another two (2) years.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I would hope to promote the Cargo series of children’s books and tell the wonderful story of Billy Baird’s Australian Army Truck around the world.

If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?

Invisibility. I would like to see and hear the reactions of children around the world, picking up and reading the Cargo books, their faces and expressions, and seeing what they have to say among themselves. That would be fantastic!
